Vein Disease ::Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are large, dilated, twisted, rope-like veins that are 4 - 5mm and wider
in diameter. Typically these veins appear blue or purple and can be very symptomatic.
Patients experience pain, swelling, throbbing, discoloration, and even ulceration with severe
vein disease. Veins are responsible for returning blood flow back to the heart and therefore
have to work against gravity. Veins have one way valves that are meant to prevent blood from
leaking backwards. With age and gravity the valves can become incompetent and the veins lose
their elasticity. This allows blood to pool into the veins which causes them to become tortuous.
Genetics, obesity, prolonged standing, sedentary lifestyle, and poor circulation are other
causes of varicose veins.
Reticular Veins
Reticular veins are medium sized veins about 1 - 4mm in width and are known as
"feeder" veins. These veins are usually blue in appearance and are larger than
spider veins, but do not have the bulging associated with varicose veins.
They are considered to be more cosmetic but can be part of an underlying, deeper vein system.
Reticular veins usually cause spider veins, so eliminating reticular veins
usually helps prevent spider veins.
Spider Veins
Spider veins are less than 1mm wide and are medically referred to as telangectasia.
These veins are extremely tiny and appear near the surface of the skin. Telangectasia can
look red or blue in color and take on a spidery or branching shape. Typically these veins are
more cosmetically displeasing, have no symptoms, and rarely become problematic. Spider veins
can be caused by pregnancy, prolonged standing, hormonal changes and genetics.
