Treatment Options ::Ligation and stripping
This procedure is done in the hospital under general anesthetic. For patients who are not
candidates for EVLT treatment this more invasive technique has been around for many
years. Tried and tested surgically stripping and removing the incompetent varicose veins
eliminates the pain and bulging associated with severe varicosities. Patients are able to go
home the same day of the procedure. There is some discomfort and pain after the surgery, but
pain medication and compression stockings help a speedy recovery.
EVLT
Endovenous laser treatment is a revolutionary new procedure used for the elimination of
varicose veins. This laser treatment is performed in the office and takes about one hour.
A local anesthetic is used so the patient experiences only mild discomfort. A laser fiber is
inserted into the incompetent vein and the energy from the laser destroys that vein. The patient
is able to walk out of the office an hour later and requires hardly any down time.
A compression stocking is worn for three days to one week after the procedure and follow up
treatment with sclerotherapy improves cosmetic finish.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
This procedure is done in the office and takes approximately thirty minutes from start to
finish. Local anesthetic is used so the patient feels minimal to no discomfort. A few small
incisions are made in the skin and the unsightly veins are cut and tied off eliminating the
pain and bulging from the varicose veins. There is minimal scarring and the results are
cosmetically very pleasing. Sclerotherapy is usually recommended for two to three
sessions after phlebectomy for an overall cosmetic finish. Medical insurance will typically
cover phlebectomy.
Sclerotherapy
This procedure involves injecting a solution directly into the spider veins using a very tiny
needle. This solution destroys the spider veins over time leading to the disappearance
of those unsightly veins. No anesthesia is required and there is only minimal discomfort during
the treatment. On average patients usually require three sclerotherapy treatments that
are scheduled four weeks apart. A variety of solutions are used for injecting spider veins
and your provider will assess which is the right one for you.
Compression hose
We offer custom fit Sigvaris compression stockings at our office. These stockings are
recommended after the various treatments to assist in recovery. The stockings are also used for
the prevention of varicose veins especially with patients who stand all day long.
Creams
We currently offer Hiruval 35, a European formulated cream that helps eliminate bruising
post injection treatment and reduces discoloration from spider veins.
